THE GILI ISLANDS
A backpacker's mecca in the 80's the Gili islands, three in total,
have been drawing visitors to their beautiful, white sandy beaches
for many years. With crystal, turquoise waters and spectacular sunsets
to view, visitors will delight in the lack of cars and motorbikes
that disturb the peace. This laid back, unspoilt environment is the
place to be at one with nature, a paradise to appreciate and treasure.
The Gili islands comprise Gili Air closest to Lombok, Gili Trawangen
and Gili Meno located between the other two. Both Gili Air and Gili
Meno have a distinct rural feel to them. Gili Air has the largest,
permanent population residing and the scuba diving and snorkelling
on this island is a memorable experience. Gili Meno is popular with
honeymooners being the quietest of the islands, where local food and
less accommodation options are available, but the culture and everyday
lifestyle can be observed.
Gili Trawangen is the largest of the islands with the most facilities
on offer. Known as the "Party" island, with many dancing in the streets
a common sight, the standard of both accommodation and food has come
of age. Accommodation ranges from beach shacks and budget accommodation
through to luxury private villas. Numerous activities for the more
adventurous are on offer, try the scuba diving, deep sea fishing,
horse riding, bicycling, surfing or walk around the island in a couple
of hours.
